Two MLS Cup contenders collide Saturday when Sporting Kansas City (8-4-9, 33 points) and the Chicago Fire (11-4-5, 38 points) renew a long-time rivalry at Children's Mercy Park. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on FOX Sports Kansas City Plus, FOX Sports Midwest Plus, Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM. Sporting KC is riding a 10-game unbeaten run in all competitions but will face a Chicago side that is unquestionably the most improved team in MLS from a year ago. The Fire boast four MLS All-Stars and are coming off a narrow defeat that snapped an impressive 8-0-3 stretch that saw Chicago temporarily move to the Eastern Conference summit. We take a statistical look at the marquee interconference matchup in our By The Numbers preview.


Head-to-head


  • Sporting KC is 3-0-2 in its last five home matches against Chicago, including shutout victories in each of the previous two meetings (2-0 in October 2014 and 1-0 in May 2015).
  • Chicago hasn't won at Children's Mercy Park since June 2012.
  • Chicago holds a 26-14-11 edge in the regular season series. Sporting KC's 26 losses to the Fire are their most against any MLS team.
  • The sides last met in July 2016 when Michael de Leeuw's 19th-minute strike gave Chicago a 1-0 win at Toyota Park.
  • Sporting KC defender Graham Zusi has four goals and two assists in 13 regular season appearances against Chicago.

  • Forward David Accam has already reached career-highs in goals (11) and assists (seven).
  • With Accam and Nikolic, Chicago is the only MLS team to have two players with at least 11 goals.
  • Goalkeeper Matt Lampson is second in MLS in goals against average (0.75) and tied for third in shutouts (six).
  • Juninho (89.3%) and Joao Meira (89.0%) rank seventh and eighth in MLS in passing accuracy among players with at least 200 passes completed.

  • SKC is unbeaten in a club-record 19 straight regular season home matches dating back to June 2016. The 19-game run is tied for the sixth-longest home unbeaten streak in MLS regular season history.
  • SKC has conceded just five goals in 10 home matches but has drawn each of its last three MLS home games by a 1-1 scoreline.
