Sporting KC homegrown signing Jaylin Lindsey and the United States enjoyed the perfect start to their FIFA U-17 World Cup campaign on Friday, defeating hosts India 3-0 to take an early lead in Group A.
Lindsey (No. 2 pictured above) started and played 90 minutes as a right back in the shutout effort, while Josh Sargent, Chris Durkin and Andrew Carleton found the back of the net to give the Americans a valuable win at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
India was outclassed in its U-17 World Cup debut, mustering a single shot on goal as Lindsey and the U.S. controlled proceedings from wire to wire.
Sargent, a native of St. Louis who will sign with German club Werder Bremen next February when he turns 18, landed the first punch with a confidently taken penalty kick on the half-hour mark after he drew a foul inside the box. Six minutes into the second half, Durkin doubled the advantage with a sweetly struck volley after India failed to clear a corner kick. Carleton provided an insurance goal with six minutes left, rounding off a quick-fire counter attack to make the score 3-0.

Coupled with Ghana's 1-0 win over Colombia earlier on Friday, the U.S. sits atop Group A after matchday one. Head coach John Hackworth's side will meet Ghana Monday at 6:30 a.m. CT on FS2 before finishing the group stage Thursday against Colombia.
A total of 24 countries are competing in the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The top two teams from each of the six groups, as well as the four best third-place teams, will advance to the Round of 16, which runs from Oct. 16-18. The championship and third-place matches will take place Saturday, Oct. 28, at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata.
