Sporting Kansas City Homegrown midfielder Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal is the recipient of the USL Goal of the Month for August, the USL announced on Monday. His stunning free kick for the Swope Park Rangers in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Tulsa Roughnecks FC on August 29 at Children’s Mercy Park received the most votes among 10 finalists for the award.
Kuzain stepped up to lash a swerving shot from the right side of the penalty area that deceived Tulsa goalkeeper Fabian Cerda, who initially stepped to his left before the ball knuckled and nestled into his right corner. That goal made the score 1-1 on the night before Hadji Barry eventually found a late winner. Kuzain’s free kick was named the No. 2 play on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 that night.
Kuzain, who will celebrate his 20th birthday this week, has two goals in 16 appearances for the Swope Park Rangers this season, along with one goal and one assist in eight appearances across all competitions for Sporting Kansas City. In July, Kuzain was selected to represent Major League Soccer in the 2018 MLS Homegrown Game, during which he played 45 minutes against the Tigres UANL U20's from Mexico.
Kuzain becomes the second Swope Park Rangers player to receive USL Goal of the Month honors. Fellow Sporting KC Academy product Nansel Selbol garnered three straight USL Goal of the Month accolades from June to August last year.
