Radio Rewind: Captain Matt Besler talks playoffs on Sports Radio 810 WHB

Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler met renowned comedian Will Farrell on Sunday at Children's Mercy Park.

And that wasn't even the best part of Besler's day.

The captain delivered a resolute performance on Decision Day, earning MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week honors for his role in a 2-1 victory over LAFC, which is co-owned by Farrell and a slew of other Hollywood celebrities.

Besler recalled the momentous afternoon this morning when he made his customary appearance on Sports Radio 810 WHB, joining The Border Patrol hosts Nate Bukaty and Steven St. John. He also looked ahead to the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs, where No. 1 seed Sporting KC has earned a Knockout Round bye to the two-legged conference semifinals.

"I've been trying to stay calm this whole season, but there are a lot of things that have me excited for the playoffs," Besler said. "We are right there (at the top). We've proved it to ourselves and to other people as well. One of our best qualities is that we have the ability to win in different ways, and that's so big in the playoffs because you never know what's going to happen. With the way that we're playing, it doesn't really matter what happens: we have the ability to win every game that we play in.

"I also think we have the biggest home field advantage in the entire league," Besler continued. "That's going to be huge because we have home field advantage throughout the playoffs in the West as the No. 1 seed. I love our team, and we've just got to keep this thing going. Let's keep playing soccer for a month and a half more."

Besler's team won't know its conference semifinal opponent until the conclusion of the single-elimination Knockout Round on Thursday night. Sporting KC will face the lowest-seeded team to advance from the Knockout Round, with No. 4 FC Dallas hosting No. 5 Portland Timbers on Wednesday and No. 3 LAFC hosting No. 6 Real Salt Lake on Thursday. Sporting KC will play the first leg on the road this Sunday before hosting the return leg at Children's Mercy Park seven days later.

Tickets for Sporting KC’s first home playoff match on Sunday, Nov. 11, are now on sale via SeatGeek.com.
