Sporting Kansas City fell 2-1 against Phoenix Rising FC on Wednesday in Visit Tucson Sun Cup action at Casino Arizona Field in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Johnny Russell gave Sporting KC the 1-0 lead in the 56th minute, collecting a cross from Homegrown right back Jaylin Lindsey and burying his shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the 2020 preseason presented by Children's Mercy.
The hosts leveled the match 10 minutes later through halftime substitute Santi Moar. The Spaniard did well to settle the ball with his left foot on his first touch before firing a right-footed shot just beneath the bar on his second touch from the top of the penalty area.
Phoenix would capitalize on a turnover deep in Sporting's defensive third for the go-ahead goal as Joey Calistri intercepted Tim Melia's pass and slotted his shot home in the 78th minute.
Sporting will conclude preseason play against the New York Red Bulls at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday at Kino North Stadium in Tucson, Arizona, before returning to Kansas City to prep for the team's MLS regular season opener on Feb. 29. Saturday's match will be streamed live on SportingKC.com for viewers in the Kansas City and Tucson regions.
