Sporting Kansas City announced yesterday the signing of Homegrown striker Wilson Harris, who has become the 13th player to progress from the Sporting KC Academy into the first team. Harris has scored 23 goals over the last two-and-a-half USL Championship seasons for Sporting KC II, becoming the youngest player to hit 20 goals in USL Championship history. In the newest edition of Just Because presented by Hallmark, we get to know Harris a bit better off the field.
As a California native, what is your favorite part about living in Kansas City?
I think downtown probably, and the food.
What is your favorite place to eat in the KC area? What do you order?
I’m a big sushi guy. My favorite place is Bob Wasabi, it’s so good. I get the rainbow roll or the Hawaiian roll.
Other than soccer, which sport would you want to go pro in?
I’d like to play golf.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
My grandfather. We just had this bond that was kind of sacred to me. He was super inspiring in everything he did and he just had such a big personality.
What athlete did you look up to growing up?
Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s so good, it’s hard to look away whenever he’s on the pitch. He’s scored some great goals and I love to score, too.
Who are your closest friends at the club and what do you guys do when you hang out?
Tyler Freeman and John Pulskamp. We just hang out; we’ve been getting into golf and when bowling was open we liked to bowl.
Who is your favorite musical artist or what is your favorite type of music to listen to?
I’d say rock is my favorite genre. I feel like I’m going generic here but maybe Led Zeppelin.
If you had to listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That’s a tough one… I know my brother’s going to judge me cause he’s in the music industry, but I’ll just go with Apocalypse Dreams by Tame Impala.
What is your favorite movie?
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Are you hooked on any TV shows?
Patriot on Amazon. I just finished it and I don’t know why they’re not making a new season. I love Mad Men, that’s probably my favorite of all time actually.
What other professional sports teams do you support?
Kansas City Chiefs, LA Dodgers and LA Lakers.
Which professional soccer player do you enjoy watching the most?
(Tottenham striker) Harry Kane. I want to play like him.
What is your favorite place to travel to for a vacation?
Hawaii. I went there once when I was like 14. We went to Maui and then drove to Hana Bay which is super isolated. It was just beautiful.
Where is the coolest place you have played outside of Children’s Mercy Park?
Probably the new Louisville stadium (Lynn Family Stadium). It’s really nice.
If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
Probably Leonardo DiCaprio. He’s just the coolest guy alive.
Which teammate of yours is the best to follow on social media and why?
John (Pulskamp) because I make fun of all his posts.
If you could be any animal in the world, what would it be and why?
Probably a gorilla. They’re just beasts.
Do you have any gameday rituals or superstitions?
No but when we have a home game, I like to go to First Watch for breakfast and Chipotle for lunch.
