The Swope Park Rangers (9-9-6, 8th place) lost 2-0 to Portland Timbers 2 (11-10-3, 6th place) at Children’s Mercy Park on Saturday night. An early goal from Timbers 2 in the seventh minute would prove to be difficult to gain an equalizer and the Rangers' winless streak would reach seven.
In the fourth minute, Tyler Blackwood had a beautiful ball and nutmeg pass to Sporting KC loanee Colton Storm. Storm was at a difficult angle to get the ball off and his attempt would go directly into Portland’s Alex Mangels hands.
Portland’s Marvin Loria would send a through ball to Jeremy Ebobisse who skipped the ball through Christian Herrera’s legs and would put Portland on the board in the seventh minute. Timbers 2 would take an early 1-0 lead.
Hadji Barry would take a through ball from Blackwood in the 18th minute, but Mangels would be there to make the stop. Herrera had an excellent save in the 27th minute from a Jack Barmby attempt.
In the 32nd minute, Sporting KC Academy product Felipe Hernandez would take a corner and send a beautiful cross to Justin Bilyeu who would send a header toward the goal, but Mangels would make the stop.
Sporting KC loanee Kharlton Belmar would take a right-footed shot from outside the box, but it would sail high of the crossbar.
Sporting KC loanee Graham Smith would concede a foul inside the penalty area in the 55th minute. Portland’s Jack Barmby would take the PK and notch it past Herrera to extend their lead to 2-0 over SPR.
Smith would send a header toward Portland’s goal in the 71st minute, but Mangels would make the catch. Hernandez sent a cross to Sporting KC loanee Wan Kuzain, who would send a left-footed shot toward the goal from outside the box, but it would be saved in the bottom left corner.
In the 79th minute, Smith looked to have scored and closed the gap, but Barry would be called offside by the referee and the goal would be called back. There would be several more attempts made by SPR, but all would miss and the Rangers would fall 2-0 to Portland Timbers FC 2.
The Rangers will remain home and face Reno 1868 FC (10-5-7, 5th place) at Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday, August 19 at 4:00 p.m. CT.
