Sporting Kansas City II has signed Academy forward Mataeo Bunbury to an Academy contract, the club announced today. Bunbury will retain his NCAA eligibility while being registered to compete in USL Championship matches with Sporting II.
Bunbury, 16, joined the Sporting KC Academy in 2020, having previously represented the Minnesota United Academy that ceased operations. The Minnesota native has scored six goals for the SKC Academy in 2021 while playing for the club’s Under-17 and Under-19 age groups.
Bunbury is the third member of his family to be a part of the Sporting Kansas City organization. His father, Alex Bunbury, played for the then Kansas City Wizards from 1999-2000, tallying four goals and four assists in 25 appearances across all competitions.
His older brother, Teal Bunbury, was drafted by Sporting KC with the fourth overall pick in 2010 and went on to record 24 goals and eight assists in 105 games for the club while helping the club win the 2012 U.S. Open Cup and 2013 MLS Cup. Teal is currently a member of the New England Revolution in MLS.
Sporting KC II returns to action on Friday night when the team hosts FC Tulsa at Children’s Mercy Park. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
