Sporting Kansas City II has signed Sporting KC’s 2021 MLS SuperDraft selection Jamil Roberts, the club announced today. Roberts will be officially added to the roster pending league and federation approval.
Roberts, 23, enjoyed a wildly successful career at Marshall University, helping the team win their first-ever NCAA College Cup national championship in May 2021. Roberts scored the game-winning goal in the final three rounds of the tournament as Marshall upset Georgetown, North Carolina and Indiana by 1-0 scorelines to claim the title.
Roberts, a native of Langport, England and a product of Plymouth Argyle FC’s academy, recorded 19 goals and 20 assists in four seasons for Marshall from 2017-2020, making 18 appearances each season.
As a junior in 2019, Roberts led the Thundering Herd to the team’s first ever NCAA Tournament appearance with a 16-3-3 record after winning the Conference USA regular season and tournament championships. His 10 assists in 2019 tied the school’s single-season record en route to earning All-Conference USA Second Team and United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region First Team honors.
Roberts participated in the 2020 College Invitational Combine hosted by Sporting Kansas City in November after Conference USA’s 2020 season was postponed due to COVID-19. Roberts was coached by Sporting Kansas City II manager Paulo Nagamura at the Combine as a member of Team Gansler.
Sporting KC II returns to action tomorrow night when the team plays host to Louisville City FC at Children’s Mercy Park. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
