Sporting Kansas City II announced today that the club has signed Sporting Kansas City Academy player Alex Cunningham to an MLS NEXT Pro amateur contracts.
Cunningham has signed this amateur contract on a single-game basis, preserving his NCAA eligibility, and will be available for selection on Sporting Kansas City II faces Colorado Rapids 2 at 2 p.m. CT at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas. Cunningham, a 17-year-old native of Springfield, Missouri, joined the Sporting KC Academy in 2019 as a U-12 player and was part of the Sporting KC U-14 team that was crowned 2021 US Youth Futsal national champions. He has played for every age group from U-12 up to U-19 and has appeared in major MLS NEXT events such as GA Cup, MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs, MLS NEXT Flex and MLS NEXT Fest.
Last year, he made his pro debut at 16 years old, playing 16 minutes in a 6-1 win over Portland Timbers 2 on August 13, 2023, tallying his first assist as well. He notched three appearances and one start, a season ago, starting in a monumental 2-1 win at Austin FC on August 25, 2023, which helped SKC II secure a spot in the MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs.
