Sporting Kansas City II announced today that the club has signed 22-year-old left back Jonathan Robinson to an MLS NEXT Pro professional contract ahead of the 2024 season.
Coming off a stellar college season at Western Michigan University that saw him tie the school record and finish second in the NCAA with 13 assists, Robinson was selected by Sporting Kansas City with the 80th overall pick in the third round of MLS SuperDraft 2024 presented by adidas on Dec. 19.
Robinson inks his first professional deal with Sporting KC II after a strong preseason campaign in Miami with Sporting's first team. He featured in Sporting's 5-0 tune-up win over Miami FC on Feb. 10 and helped spark a 3-1 comeback victory over Atlanta United FC on Feb. 17, drawing a penalty kick late in the game that was converted by Willy Agada.
During his junior season last fall, Robinson captained Western Michigan to the regular season and Missouri Valley Conference tournament titles while earning First Team All-MVC and First Team All-West Region honors. He also debuted for the Flint City Bucks in USL League Two in 2023.
Robinson began his college career at Marquette University, playing 27 games for the Golden Eagles in 2021. He then transferred to Western Michigan, where he has registered three goals and 18 assists in 44 games played across the 2022 and 2023 campaigns for the nationally ranked Broncos, highlighted by an ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 play with the game-winning goal as time expired against the University of Wisconsin.
Sporting KC II now has 12 players under MLS NEXT Pro professional contracts for the 2024 campaign, which will begin on March 17 with a visit to Houston Dynamo 2.
