At just six years old, Jorge Mendez was diagnosed with Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis (MPGN), a condition that would change his childhood and adolescence. MPGN is a rare disease that damages the kidneys and as this disease progressed, Jorge underwent a kidney transplant on March 13th, 2023, at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, marking a pivotal moment in his battle against this chronic illness. With the support of his family, Jorge emerged from surgery ready to embrace life.

Over a year has passed since that life-changing day, and Jorge has grown up so much in that year. Not only was 2023 a big health year for Jorge, but he also graduated high school amidst the chaos. Jorge has not only reclaimed his health but has also returned to the sport that has always been his passion: soccer.

Soccer has been more than just a game for Jorge; it’s been a source of healing and joy. "I play; I finished my club season a couple of months ago," he recalls. "It was a good run. That was my last season. Now I play just Sunday leagues." His love for the sport, instilled by his father from a young age, has remained a constant in his life. "Every time, everywhere I go, it's always soccer. It's always like that with me.”

Despite the challenges he faced, Jorge's spirit has never wavered. He recalls fond memories of playing soccer with friends and family, even recalling joining an adult league with his father at the young age of thirteen.

"I would always beg my cousins to play soccer with me," Jorge shared. This connection to his roots and his family has only deepened post-transplant. "I just try to enjoy every day I have in whatever I'm doing," he says, emphasizing the importance of living in the moment.

Jorge's journey has not only been about personal triumph but also about the bonds he shares with his loved ones. "I could get angry at them, but it’s always love," he shares as he reflects on his family. "There’s nothing in the world that I wouldn’t do for them or they wouldn’t do for me." This unwavering support has been a crucial element in his healing process, allowing him to focus on what truly matters – his health and happiness.

In July 2023, Jorge was honored as the Victory Honoree at the Sporting KC vs. Chivas Leagues Cup match, a moment that filled him with pride and emotion.

"It was always exciting for me," he recalls. "Seeing the brightness in my dad's eyes at a real stadium was a moment I’ll never forget." This experience was not just a celebration of his resilience; it was a reminder of the love that surrounds him and the dreams he continues to hold.

As he moves forward, Jorge is also focused on his academic and professional goals. "I had a job, and I'm just trying to figure out what my steps are," he shares. With aspirations of obtaining his real estate license, he is determined to make the most of his opportunities. "Overall, I'm just trying to live my summer because I didn't have a summer last year.”

His journey has taught him valuable lessons about strength and perseverance. "For the kiddos that are going through the same or even worse, I’d like to say that at the end of the day, you have at least someone that cares about you," he advises. "It’s okay to not be as strong some days, but it’s not okay to give up."

Jorge embodies this philosophy, choosing to focus on the present and take life one day at a time. As he reflects on his journey, he finds solace in a Bible verse that has become his mantra: Matthew 6:34.

This reminder to not be anxious about tomorrow but to handle what he can today has guided him through the toughest moments. "I feel like my mentality has grown bigger," he shares, emphasizing his desire to help others who may be struggling.

Jorge is passionate about soccer, his family, and supporting others facing challenges. Anyone who meets him or has the opportunity to talk with him will see his passion for life.
