Sporting Kansas City signs defender Neven Markovic

Markovic - DL

Sporting Kansas City announced Friday that the club has signed defender Neven Markovic. The 25-year-old joins Sporting KC from Doxa Drama FC, who compete in the Superleague Greece.

Markovic fulfills an international spot and has been added to the club's roster. Per club policy, terms of the agreement will not be disclosed.

“I like it here because MLS is so organized. The people are good, the city is good, I am very happy here,” Markovic said. “All I have to worry about is playing on the field.”

Markovic started his professional career in 2005 when he played for Serbian side FK Rad Belgrade. From 2008-2010 he played in the top league in Romania for FC Vaslui. At Vaslui, Markovic appeared in over 20 games and played in UEFA competition.

In 2011, the left-footed Markovic played for clubs in Croatia (NK Zagreb) and Greece (Doxa Drama).

“He’s a very tenacious defender with a lot of experience at a very young age. This is a good addition for the club going forward with this next stretch of games,” Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes said. “He has the same work ethic and mentality that we’re looking for.”

Sporting Kansas City also announced on Friday that defender Shawn Singh has been waived. The 2012 Supplemental Draft pick out of UCLA appeared in three pre-season matches and four Reserve League games for Sporting KC.
