Dom Dwyer has played six seasons for Sporting KC since being selected in the first round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. In 2016 he tallied 16 MLS goals, becoming the first player in team history to reach 12 goals in three straight regular seasons.
Dwyer finished 2015 with a team-high 17 goals in all competitions to go along with three assists. He enjoyed a breakout 2014 campaign in which he garnered Sporting KC Offensive Player of the Year and co-MVP honors and set a single-season club record with 24 goals in all competitions. Dwyer's 67 goals in all competitions are second most in team history.
Born and raised in England, Dwyer was named an MLS All-Star in 2014 for the first time in his career. He has scored 89 goals in all competitions since the beginning of 2013, 67 for Sporting KC and 22 for former USL PRO affiliate Orlando City SC. On June 26, 2017, Dwyer received his first call up to play for the U.S. Men's National team in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
2017: MLS regular season: Has started 14 of 15 matches, recording five goals and one assist (1271 minutes played). Assisted Gerso's game-winning strike and added a late goal of his own in a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids on April 9. Scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers on April 15. Scored the second goal in a 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake on April 29 with his weaker right foot. Scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls on May 3, tying Kansas City's all-time club record with his 13th game-winning goal in the regular season. Open Cup: Started and played 90 minutes in a 4-0 fourth-round win over Minnesota United FC on June 14, scoring the third goal of the night to become Sporting KC's all-time leading scorer in the Open Cup with six.
2016: Was named Sporting KC's Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot winner. Started 33 of 36 appearances in all competitions, recording 16 goals and three assists (3037 minutes played). MLS regular season: Started 31 of 33 appearances, scored 16 goals and tallied three assists (2823 minutes played). Scored two goals in a 2-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on March 12. Assisted Brad Davis' goal in a 1-0 win over Toronto FC on March 20. Assisted Benny Feilhaber's goal and scored the second in a 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls on April 9. Came off the bench in the second half and scored a goal in a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids on April 13. Scored the equalizing goal in a 2-1 win over Orlando City SC on May 15, his 50th for Sporting KC across all competitions. Scored a goal in a 3-1 loss to Real Salt Lake on May 21. Scored two goals in a 2-2 draw at Montreal Impact on June 25, becoming the third player in MLS history to score nine goals over a five-game span against the same opponent. Scored his first goal of the season in a 3-2 win over Philadelphia on April 5. Assisted Krisztian Nemeth's goal in a 2-1 loss at LA Galaxy on April 18. Scored a goal in a 4-4 draw at Houston on April 25. Scored a goal in a 1-1 draw at D.C. United on May 9. Scored a goal in a 4-2 win over New England on May 20. Won MLS Goal of the Week for his goal in a 4-2 win over New England on May 20 (Week 12). Scored a goal in a 2-1 loss at Real Salt Lake on June 21. Scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Montreal on July 18. Scored a goal in a 1-1 draw against Houston on Aug. 1. Scored the team's second goal in a 4-3 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Aug. 15 as Sporting KC came from two goals behind after the 80th minute to complete one of the best comebacks in MLS history. Started and played 90 minutes in a 6-2 fifth round win over FC Dallas on July 1, scoring four goals to set the club's all-time record for most goals in a competitive match. Started and played 90 minutes in a 3-1 quarterfinal win over the Houston Dynamo on July 21, scoring the game-winning goal and assisting the third to Krisztian Nemeth in the second half. His goal against Houston moved him into a tie as the top Open Cup goal scorer (five) in Sporting KC history. Started and played 90 minutes in a 3-1 semifinal win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, playing a crucial part in Benny Feilhaber's game-winning goal. Started and played 120 minutes in a championship win over the Philadelphia Union on Sept. 30 as Sporting KC prevailed 7-6 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in regulation. He converted his penalty kick in the shootout.
2014: Was named Sporting KC's 2014 Offensive Player of the Year and Co-MVP. MLS regular season: Ranked second in MLS with 22 goals, the best single-season goal scoring total in club history. 2013: Spent first half of season on-loan to USL Pro affiliate Orlando City SC. Scored 26 goals in all competitions between USL Pro, Open Cup, MLS, MLS Cup Playoffs and CCL. MLS: Made season debut with Sporting KC as a sub in a 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew on June 29. Finished season with 16 games played and seven start. Scored first MLS goal in a 3-2 loss to the New York Red Bulls on August 3. Scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over D.C. United on October 18. Playoffs: Appeared in all five MLS Cup Playoff matches with three starts. Scored the game winning goal in the second leg of the Eastern Conference Championship vs. the Houston Dynamo. CCL: Appeared in all four 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League group stage matches (three starts). Scored a goal in a 2-0 win over Real Esteli on August 7. Earned a PK (that Soony Saad converted) against CD Olimpia on August 27.
2012: The first-year pro was Sporting Kansas City’s No. 16 pick in the first round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Dwyer played his first competitive minutes in Sporting KC’s 3-2 victory over Orlando City SC in U.S. Open Cup competition before making his MLS debut with the club on September 1 against Toronto FC. Dwyer also saw time in two international club friendlies and Reserve League action. Dwyer played a little more than half the match against Montpellier Herault SC and was then used for 90 minutes against Stoke City FC. Dwyer also played nine Reserve League matches this season and ties Soony Saad and Teal Bunbury for most goals in the season with two. Dwyer played in the first playoff match of his MLS career on November 4 in 2-0 loss against the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.
INTERNATIONAL (3 caps, 2 goals)
2017: Dwyer, who gained U.S. MNT eligibility when he became an American citizen March 2017, was selected to head coach Bruce Arena's 23-man roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in late June. The occasion marked his first national team selection at the youth or senior level. Dwyer punctuated his debut for the U.S. MNT with a goal in a 2-1 friendly win over Ghana on July 1, starting and playing 76 minutes. In doing so, he also became the 48th player to score a goal in his first U.S. senior team appearance. 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup: Started and played 90 minutes in a 1-1 group stage draw against Panama, scoring the go-ahead goal to become the 10th player in U.S. MNT history to score in each of his first two appearances. Started and played 74 minutes in a 3-0 group stage win over Nicaragua on July 15.
COLLEGE
2011: M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist and NSCAA All-American Second Team selection after being named the Big East Offensive Player of the Year. Led South Florida with 16 goals and two assists in 21 games, helping the team reach the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
2009-10: Named NJCAA National Player of the Year in his second season at Tyler (Texas) Junior College. Helped lead the team to back-to-back national junior college championships, going undefeated with 41-0-1 record. Scored a combined 52 goals in 42 games with 10 assists.
YOUTH: Spent several years in Norwich City FC academy in England. Also played three years at the College of West Anglia Football Academy and at semi-professional level with King's Lynn FC and Staines Town FC.
PERSONAL: Has earned his English FA Level 1 coaching certificate. Studied for BTEC National Diploma in Sport. Lists favorite athlete as Thierry Henry, and watches Henry highlight reels when preparing for matches. Enjoys listening to hip-hop and R&B. Spent time in the Norwich City youth academy while current Premier League starts Craig Bellamy and Peter Crouch were also at the club. Favorite celebrity encounter was speaking to former Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle.
