Recap: Sporting Kansas City II suffers 4-1 defeat on the road at Louisville City FC

Sporting Kansas City II (2-5-1, 7 points) suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Louisville City FC (4-3-1, 13 pts.) at Lynn Family Stadium in Kentucky on Wednesday night. It was the seventh straight road game for Sporting II, while Louisville were enjoying their seventh consecutive home match.

Sam Raben scored his first goal for the club off Dillon Serna’s first assist to briefly pull the socre back to 2-1 midway through the first half, but Louisville ran out comfortable winners following a brace from Corben Bone and goals from Cameron Lancaster and Napo Matsoso.

Louisville got off to a dream start in the 11th minute when Antoine Hoppenot broke in behind the Sporting II backline and his cross picked out Lancaster, who chested the ball down before slamming home his fifth goal of the season.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure and Academy goalkeeper Gavin Krenecki, making his second straight appearance, came up with a phenomenal save to deny Matsoso who was free behind the SKC II defense. The ensuing corner was sent back across the face of goal, ricocheted off Camden Riley and struck the post.

Sporting II was unable to hold Louisville off much longer, and Bone doubled the home side’s lead in the 29th minute when he latched onto Lancaster’s flick and curled a confident finish into the bottom corner.

However, SKC II hit back almost immediately. After a free kick was recycled, left back Dillon Serna delivered a brilliant cross toward the back post that was met by right back and fellow Coloradoan Sam Raben, who headed the ball into the corner and cut the deficit to 2-1 with his first goal for the club.

The first-half water break immediately followed, sucking momentum away from Sporting II and Louisville found another gear before the halftime interval. In the 36th minute, Matsoso advanced down the right wing and cut the ball across to Bone who fired home his second of the night, making the score 3-1.

Louisville added their fourth in the 53rd minute as Matsoso rode his luck after cutting inside onto his left foot, seeing his effort deflected and squirm helplessly past Krenecki and into the back of the net.

Sporting II enjoyed more of the game as the second half wore on, and substitute Fredinho Mompremier almost pulled a goal back with a bouncing volley that flew just wide before Camden Riley’s attempt from the edge of the area was blocked near the goalline.

Mompremier thought he’d scored in the 84th minute when he was picked out by Dominik Resetar, but his powerful volley was blocked by Devon William’s nether regions as Louisville rode out the three-goal victory.

Sporting KC II returns to action with the side’s only home game of the revised schedule this Saturday, August 22 when the side hosts OKC Energy FC at Swope Soccer Village. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
