The USL Championship today announced its full schedule for the 2021 regular season, which will see Sporting Kansas City II play 32 matches from May 1 to Oct. 30.
As previously announced, all 31 USL Championship clubs will navigate a 32-game slate over the course of 28 weeks, with the league divided into four divisions and two conferences. The structure for the 2021 USL Championship Playoffs, as well as kickoff times and broadcast details for all regular season matches, will be announced soon.
Led by fourth-year head coach and former Sporting Kansas City great Paulo Nagamura, Sporting KC II has been placed into the Central Division of the Eastern Conference alongside Atlanta United 2, Birmingham Legion FC, FC Tulsa, Indy Eleven, Louisville City FC, Memphis 901 FC and OKC Energy FC.
Sporting KC II will play all seven Central Division opponents four times each—twice at home and twice on the road. The club will also host two Mountain Division foes—Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on May 14 and El Paso Locomotive FC on May 30—and visit Pacific Division sides LA Galaxy II on May 19 and Oakland Roots SC on Oct. 30 in the regular season finale.
Children’s Mercy Park will serve as the home of Sporting KC II in 2021. USL Championship matches at the venue will be held without fans in attendance until further notice.
After visiting FC Tulsa in the club’s season opener on May 1, Sporting KC II will welcome longtime rivals OKC Energy FC on May 7 for the first of 16 home fixtures at Children’s Mercy Park. Having played 14 of 16 league games away from home in 2020, Nagamura’s men will never face a road trip longer than two matches this season. Arguably the most challenging two-game road swing will see Sporting KC II meet Indy Eleven on May 22 just three days after battling LA.
From June 9 to July 24, Sporting KC II will play six of nine matches away. The following month sets up nicely, however, as the team will host six of seven games between July 28 and Sept. 4. That stretch includes a four-game homestand beginning Aug. 14 as Atlanta, Indy, Memphis and OKC venture to Kansas City.
Following back-to-back Friday home games against Tulsa and Birmingham on Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, Sporting KC II will hit the road for four of their last five contests. The club will visit Memphis and Louisville in the space of three days prior to hosting Atlanta in its home finale on Oct. 13. Trips to Birmingham on Oct. 24 and Oakland—a highly anticipated newcomer to the league—will round out Sporting KC II’s regular season slate.
