Sporting KC forward Dom Dwyer was named to MLSsoccer.com’s Team of the Week for the second straight time after scoring in matches against the Philadelphia Union and Chicago Fire.
Peter Vermes’ men lost both contests last week by 2-1 scorelines, but Dwyer continued his excellent run of form to keep Sporting KC in contention for a result. A stunning one-time strike Wednesday vs. Philadelphia, just nine minutes after his introduction as a second half substitute, and a diving header Sunday in Chicago brought Dwyer’s goal tally to eight on the season, tied for second-most in MLS.
Dwyer’s spot on Week 11’s Team of the Week marks the third time he has earned such honors this season (Week 7, Week 10). Goal.com's MLS Team of the Week also featured the 23-year-old Englishman.
As discussed in this week’s Beyond the Box Score, Dwyer is the 10th player in Sporting KC history to score in three consecutive regular season appearances. Only one player in club history has scored more goals through the season's first 11 games than Dwyer, as Eddie Johnson struck nine times in 2007.
Sporting KC defender Igor Juliao, who became the youngest player in club history to play the full 90 minutes of an MLS match in his debut Wednesday, wasted no time garnering honors of his own. The 19-year-old Brazilian was named to Sports Illustrated's Week 11 MLS Best XI for his active displays on the backline.
On loan from Fluminense FC through the end of 2014, Juliao led all players in tackles (6) and tackles won (5), while accumulating the second most touches (88) and winning the second most duels (9) among players who featured in Sporting KC's loss to Philadelphia. He showed versatility against Chicago, switching from his preferred right back position to left back as part of a makeshift defense.
