The United States Men's National Team fell 3-2 to Mexico in the CONCACAF Cup on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. With the win, Mexico earned CONCACAF's berth in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Sporting KC captain Matt Besler started the match and played 120 minutes for his 27th cap for the U.S. MNT. Graham Zusi was available off the bench but did not feature on Saturday for head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
Javier Hernandez opened the scoring for Mexico in the 10th minute before Geoff Cameron leveled the match for the Yanks in the 16th minute. Oribe Peralta and Bobby Wood traded goals in 96th and 108th minute, respectively, but Paul Aguilar's laser strike won the match for Mexico in the 118th minute.
In 65 meetings with Mexico, Saturday marked just the second time that the U.S. MNT and Mexico played extra time. The last extra time match between these two teams came in the 1999 Confederations Cup semifinals at Azteca Stadium. Mexico was also victorious in that match earning a 1-0 result.
Besler and Zusi will return to Kansas City ahead of Sporting KC's weekend match against San Jose at Avaya Stadium. Friday's match will kick off at 10 p.m. CT and will be televised nationally on Unimas, locally on KMCI-TV and across the Midwest on SKCTV.
