The United States Women's National Team opens their 2014 CONCACAF Women's Championship campaign at Sporting Park tonight against Trinidad and Tobago. The World Cup qualifier will kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast nationally on FOX Sports 2. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com and Sporting Park box offices.
The U.S. has won four of the five qualifying tournaments the team has participated in since 1991, falling only in the 2011 edition when the U.S. WNT was upset by Mexico in the semifinal.
The United States and Trinidad and Tobago are joined by Guatemala and Haiti in Group A. The United States is seeking their seventh World Cup berth while Trinidad and Tobago, Guatemala and Haiti are all in search of their first World Cup appearance.
The 2014 CONCACAF Women's Championship features eight countries divided into two groups of four, with the top two finishers in each group moving into the semifinals. The two finalists and the winner of the third-place match will qualify directly for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada. The fourth-place team will enter a two-leg playoff against South American third-place finisher Ecuador for a final berth.
The U.S. WNT -- led by head coach Jill Ellis -- features Abby Wambach, the leading goalscorer in U.S. Soccer history with 170 goals scored. The team will also boast FCKC standouts and reigning NWSL champions Lauren Holiday (2013 NWSL MVP, 2014 Championship Game MVP), Amy Rodriguez (FCKC leading goalscorer) and Becky Sauerbrunn (2013 & 2014 NWSL Defender of the Year).
U.S. Soccer has outscored Trinidad and Tobago 54-2 in the previous seven meetings. The two countries met most recently in 2004.
Trinidad and Tobago is coached by Randy Waldrum, currently the head coach of the Houston Dash, the newest expansion franchise in the NWSL. Waldrum's squad boasts two players with NWSL ties in 2014.
